Job Description

Crops/Commodities:
Potato and Corn.
Primary duties (performed the majority of workdays):
Perform manual labor and operate agricultural equipment to prepare land for the production of potatoes and corn. Clear fields of rocks, brush, weeds, volunteer vegetation, and other debris. Prepare and maintain field access roads and turn rows. Operate tractors and other agricultural equipment to till, level, and prepare soil. Install, maintain, or remove irrigation and drainage systems, erosion-control materials, or field coverings, as applicable. Dig, clean, and maintain drainage ditches to ensure proper water management. Mark fields or rows. Load and unload agricultural materials, tools, and equipment used in field preparation. Inspect, clean, service, and perform routine maintenance on tractors, implements, and other field equipment used in land preparation. Repair field infrastructure necessary for potato or corn production. Perform general field sanitation by removing trash, fencing materials, and other obstacles that interfere with production. Spray fertilizer or pesticide solutions to control insects, fungi and weeds. May perform other agricultural tasks that are incidental to and in conjunction with land preparation.

Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as digging, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

Place hydraulic motors on field trucks backing up to flume; work with managers to keep steady flow of product; pull floor boards out of potato truck bodies; pick weeds, rocks, dirt clumps and bad potatoes out before washer; sort potatoes for grade; box or stack clean sorted potatoes; change sizing chains on grader; clean workplace and maintain cleanliness; monitor bagging equipment; replace consumables in packaging operation; stack bags and boxes on pallets; make boxes manually or mechanically; may operate forklift; paint equipment; shovel cross ditches and install plastic spillways; shovel cross ditches after rain to speed removal of water; cover exposed potatoes or potato seed; dig samples of potatoes by hand to determine when to desiccate; cut grass, pull weeds, operate a weeder; repair pallets; drive tractors; mechanical duties; harvest and inspect crops by hand.

Run, maneuver, navigate, or drive vehicles or mechanized equipment such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, ATVs, and bulk bodies. Agricultural equipment operators use a variety of farm equipment to plow and sow seeds, as well as maintain and harvest crops. They may use tractors, fertilizer spreaders, and trucks and operate machines such as conveyor belts, loading machines, separators, cleaners, and dryers. Drives gasoline or diesel-powered tractor to move materials, draw farm implements, tow trailers, pull out objects embedded in the ground, or pull cable of winch to raise, lower, or load heavy material or equipment; fasten attachments, such as graders, plows, and rollers to tractor with hitch pins.

Before any worker is required to operate any farm equipment, the worker will be instructed in the proper and safe operation of tractor. Workers must notify supervisor of any mechanical issues. Workers will be required to operate tractors according to instructions and in a manner that protects the operator, other workers, trees, crops, and equipment. During certain duties, workers may be required to work in teams. When engaging in teamwork activities, workers will coordinate with other members of the team to accomplish the task. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job.
