Job Description

This job corresponds to SOC Code 45-2092 Level 1.

The total number of workers needed for this job opportunity is 73 for dates of need beginning 10/01/2026 and ending 05/14/2027. However, groups of workers are expected to begin work at different times. 10 workers will begin on or near 10/01/2026. 48 workers will begin on or near 11/01/2026. 15 workers will begin on or near 01/15/2027. All workers will have the same end date (05/14/2027).

Primary duties are harvesting and general farm work.

Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time. Duties include:

Shovel Work (End): Using a shovel to tuck in the ends of the plastic being laid by machinery at the ends of each row or general shovel work on the farm.

Planting: Loading and unloading plant trays from plant delivery boxes to planting machine and unloading empty trays from planter back onto plant boxes. Riding on plant machine or walking with tray, placing one plant into each hole made by plant machine and gathering soil to fill in space around the plant with soil by hand. Walking behind planting machine, placing a plant in hole that was missed and filling the hole with soil by hand. Removing plants at walkways.

Replanting and resetting: Carrying trays that weigh 1 to 5 pounds into field to replace and replant dead or injured plants in the field rows.

Irrigation installation & removal: Connecting and installing irrigation (poly) lines at various points in fields for irrigation practices of crops. Removing irrigation (poly) lines and connections at end of crop season. This task will include shovel work and routine irrigation maintenance as needed.

Freeze protection: Rolling out crop cover material over crops in field during freeze events.

Staking 48"-54": Gathering and carrying bundles of stakes from field trucks and placing stakes between each tomato plant through every row in the field. Each stake must remain upright. After stakes are placed, stakes will be driven 12 to 14 inches into the ground using a hand-held hammer or an air hammer system being pulled by a tractor. This task will include cleaning up and removal of broken stakes as needed. Paid per 100 ft.

Tying: Attaching a small box of string to one's waist with belt and in one hand using a tying stick in the other hand, attach string to the tying stick. Then take the tying stick and looping string around the tomato stake and standing tomato plant between stakes and pulling string tight to hold the plant up between stakes. Continue process for each tomato stake and plant for entire tomato field on both sides of the tomato plant. This task will require the removal of empty boxes and trash from field at the end of the tying process.
