Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Dialysis

Position Summary

The Dialysis Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care to individuals with acute and chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis treatment. Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician, the LPN monitors patient status, administers prescribed treatments and medications, operates dialysis equipment, and promotes patient safety and comfort throughout the dialysis process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare dialysis machines and treatment areas according to established policies and infection-control standards.

Perform patient assessments, including obtaining vital signs, weights, and documenting relevant clinical information before, during, and after treatments.

Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments as directed.

Administer medications and treatments within the scope of LPN practice and physician orders.

Monitor patients for complications or adverse reactions during dialysis and promptly report significant findings to the RN or physician.

Maintain accurate and timely patient records and treatment documentation.

Educate patients and families regarding dialysis procedures, dietary restrictions, medication compliance, and vascular access care.

Assist with management and monitoring of vascular access sites, including AV fistulas, grafts, and central venous catheters.

Follow infection prevention protocols, including proper cleaning and disinfection of equipment.

Collaborate with physicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and other healthcare team members to support patient care plans.

Participate in quality improvement activities and maintain compliance with state, federal, and facility regulations.

Respond appropriately to emergencies and assist with life-saving interventions as needed.

Qualifications

Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing.

Graduation from an accredited practical nursing program.

Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

Dialysis experience required.

Knowledge of renal disease, dialysis procedures, and infection-control practices.

Strong communication, organizational, and patient-care skills.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Frequent lifting, transferring, and repositioning of patients.

Ability to operate dialysis equipment and medical devices safely.

Visual and manual dexterity necessary for patient assessment and treatment administration.

Work Environment

Outpatient dialysis clinic, hospital dialysis unit, or other renal care setting.

Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases.

May require flexible scheduling, including early morning, evening, weekend, or holiday shifts.
