Work is performed on private landowner plantations and on State forest lands. Pine straw is spread for the purpose of landscaping, such as being used as decorative mulch, as well as a deterrent for weeds in flower beds and to retain moisture for plants. Debris is disposed of with a skid steer and a mulcher.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: hand raking, gathering, baling, stacking, applying and spreading pine straw, and loading of pine straw from standing pine plantation. Workers will first manually clear the ground of underlying plants, loose branches, pine cones, and any other debris. After clearing the tract, workers rake the pine straw and deposit it into a bailing box. Workers then load the pine straw onto trucks by hand. Individual pine straw workers will gather and bale approximately 200 bales of pine straw per day, covering about one acre of land.
